In as much as Sweden can be regarded as one of the best country to study in the world, there are many challenges you may face as a student in Sweden.
It is important to be aware about these issues before settling for Sweden as your dream place to study. For some students, they have what it takes to overcome all the challenges and in such a case Sweden is the right choice for them.
Before I move on to analyze these reasons why you should not study in Sweden, if you find yourself facing any or some of the issues, I will advise you to sort it out or plan ahead of it before settling for Sweden.
High Tuition Fee
Unlike before, higher education in Sweden is tuition free and there were a lot of international students from all over the world in many Swedish universities but since the introduction of tuition fee in Sweden, the numbers of international students have been on the decrease due to how expensive the tuition fee is.
The cheapest program you can get in a Swedish university cost around 90,000 SEK (9000 euros) per year while some programs can cost as much as 450,000 (45,000 euros). Now it is left for you to decide if the tuition is too expensive for you or not.
There are many other countries where you can actually study free like in Finland and Norway. Beside in Germany and many other countries, you can pay as lower as 1000 euros to get almost or same quality of education. Why pay more if you can’t afford it?
Little or No Student Part-time Jobs
From several observation, many African and Asian students moving abroad to follow their study program will actually want to work during their study period in order to cover some of their expenses. This scenario is common with students without secured funding for their studies.
The bad news is in Sweden, there is relatively or no student jobs. The crucial barrier even if it will be possible after learning is language. Sweden does not use English language as their first language in as much as almost everybody understands English language.
Even when you learn Swedish language which I doubt a student can do since it will take at least 6 – 12 months to learn basic communication skill and you have to wait in the queue for a while if you apply for the language course before enrollment.
If you have your funding already, it should not be an issue for you but if otherwise, I will advise you should not take the risk rather think of somewhere else or look for a full scholarship that will cover all your expense.
No Post Student / Work Visa
Post student or post work visa is a special type of visa that most countries give to international students who have studied in the country and wish to spend one or two years to practice what they have been taught in the university.
It is a great opportunity for student to frame their CV in the right path with a year or two working experience or internship. It increases the chances of getting better employment since you have worked and garner on-the-work experience.
In Sweden, international students are only given 2 weeks after their studies to leave Sweden. It is even hard for students who wish to look for jobs and spend more time in Sweden to builder their career before heading back to home.
If it is on your plan to stay longer in Sweden after your studies, you have to think twice and plan ahead if not, the best bet is to look for a program in countries that offer post work visa like United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and so on.
I do hope that these points have thrown more light on why you should not study in Sweden if you have to battle with these issues.
