Educational Materials? What the Open Educational Resources (OER) Hoped to Achieve

Educational Materials

What are Educational Materials

Educational materials are resources used at any level of training and education. There are educational materials that are meant for kindergarten, educational materials that are meant for nursery, primary, secondary and educational materials meant for institutions of higher learning.

Educational materials also vary from subjects to subjects. Open educational recourses are when educational materials are made available and fee for the use of anybody who is interest round the world.

They are freely available and regularly openly certified papers and media that are helpful for education, learning, training, evaluation and investigation purposes.

Even though a number of people regard the utilization of an open system to be a necessary trait of OER, it is not a condition that is globally accepted.

The advancement and sponsorship of open educational resources is over and over again aggravated by a longing to curtail the commoditization of knowledge and make available an interchange or improved learning standard.

Open Educational Resources

Open educational resources promoters hope to achieve one day an ideal situation where teachers and students have free and equal access to high-class educational materials all over the world.

A situation where the educational materials are collectively produced, restricted and customized for the learner’s particular needs and framework and a situation where the cost of producing the educational materials will be shared among all participating countries of the world and which the cost of producing the materials become more and more negligible over the years till the cost becomes negligible.

This is what open educational resources seem to achieve but such an Ideal situation is not yet existent in the worlds today but may be in the future.

One aspect of this alteration is open and express access to educational materials.
In an article written by Charles M. Vest, President Emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recapped some of his understanding of what the open educational materials will lead to in these words

“My view is that in the open-access movement, we are seeing the early emergence of  a meta-university—a transcendent, accessible, empowering, dynamic, communally constructed framework of open materials and platforms on which much of higher  education worldwide can be constructed or enhanced. The Internet and the Web will provide the communication infrastructure, and the open-access movement and its derivatives will provide much of the knowledge and information infrastructure.”

He was just describing the result, the concept and the impact of the continuing initiatives of making educational materials open and available across the globe through the instrumentality of the internet.

UNESCO organized in 2002 a forum on the Impact of Open educational materials for higher institutions in the 3rd world countries of the world.

Among the upshot of the educational forum were the conception and the theory of Open Educational Resources (OER). The idea stretched speedily and in (2005), Johnstone states that the explanation of Open Educational Resources just two years after the UNESCO forum incorporated:
• “Learning resources – courseware, content modules, learning objects, learner-support and assessment tools, online learning communities
• Resources to support teachers – tools for teachers and support materials to enable them to create, adapt, and use OER, as well as training materials for teachers and other teaching tools
• Resources to assure the quality of education and educational practice”

In open educational materials schemes, materials such as the ones mentioned above are provided and made readily and easily accessible via the internet round the world with a negligible or no cost at all.

There is no doubt that the outcome of making educational resources widely available in this way will greatly impact on the lives of teachers and students as well as educational managements and institutions round the globe as the years go by.
