The main objective of this research institute is to constantly monitor development in agriculture, economic, social, governance, physical, human resources and business, technological aspects of Nigerian society. NISER measures the development of indicators such as:
a) Agriculture production indicators
b) Critical skills utilization index
c) Economic self reliance indicators
d) Index of housing
e) Indicators of business conditions and expectation
f) Political development indicators
g) Quality of life indicators

Programme of Individual Research Projects
This research programme is intended to provide opportunities for the researchers to continue and develop their expertise and actively participate in the advancement of knowledge in the chosen field of specialization. Every researcher is encouraged to undertake and complete the individual research projects per year as such there are several completed an ongoing research works in various social sciences and technological disciplines.

NISER Review of Nigerian Development (NRND)

This research regularly profiles development patterns in different sectors of the Nigerian economy.
It attempts a thorough analysis of national data in a way that permits holistic overview of profile and performances, compared across different economy and cultures that make up Nigeria.

External Supported Research Projects
Most of the projects undertaken by the institution at the instance or with the support of other organizations are aimed at articulation and for project development, execution and operation.

NISER research departments

a) Surveillance and forecasting department
Design and update of macro economic models for the country
Develop natural resource demand and supply forecast for evidence based decision making
Develop manpower requirements and availability forecast for evidence based decision making
Develop and publish macro economic indicators for the country
Monitor, analyze and forecast current and future socio economic development in Nigeria and the world with the view to generate credible information source for policy makers, business groups and students on the trends in key social and economic areas.
b) Economic policy research department
Conduct a wide range of practical socio economic research with a view to provide inputs and guidelines for long term policy formulation and investment decisions.
Conduct studies on major changes in the domestic and international scene that will require changes in the current policies across all productive sectors and private sector.
Conduct studies on the impact of existing policies and programmes of government and recommend shift or adjustments where necessary.
Coordinate trainings and conferences and workshops relevant to the department.
c) Social and governance policy research
Conduct a wide range of practical research with a view to provide inputs and guidelines for long term policy formulation aimed at improving governance and raising human development index across all groups in Nigeria.
Conduct studies on major changes in the domestic and international scene that ma require changes to existing policies across the entire public and social sector areas.
Conduct studies o the impact of existing policies and programmes of government and recommend shifts or adjustments where necessary.
Conducting trainings, seminars, and workshop in related fields.
