Accountancy is one of the programs in Faculty of Management Sciences offered in the Postgraduate School of most Nigerian Universities, approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The programme was designed in a bid to further educate knowledge seekers in order to serve competently in various sectors of the economy.


As a result of the high peculiar nature and demand for accountants, Nigerian Universities aim to produce highly motivated and high quality accountants who is much needed in a developing country like Nigeria.


Nigerian Postgraduate schools offering accountancy are concerned with producing well-trained accountants, to be able to engage in collaborative cutting edge research within and outside the country as a means of promoting excellence and maintaining leadership.


Nigerian students following a masters degree in accountancy in any Nigerian university will be expose to certain core  areas of capital markets theories, financial reporting and corporate finance, strategic management accounting module.

It aims to enhance the participants employability and/or progress to a doctorate programme or study for a professional accounting qualification.


Entry Requirements

The admission requirements for Accountancy Postgraduate program in Nigeria includes any of the following


Candidates admitted into the M.Sc. programme in Accounting shall possess a minimum of second Class Upper Division in accounting any recognized University.
Candidates with Second Class Lower Division in Accounting from University of Benin or any other recognized University and those with Higher National Diploma (HND) upper division must possess additional qualifications such as PGD in Accounting, ICAN, MBA, MBF or M.Sc. Economics to be eligible for admission.
Holders of professional qualifications in Accounting will also be considered for admission, provided the candidates possess additional qualifications such as PG Diploma in Accounting, PG Diploma in Taxation, PG Diploma in Forensic Accounting, MBA, MBF or Masters in related discipline. A professional qualification in Accounting will be taken to mean an Associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ICAN, ANAN, CITN or any other equivalent body.


In exceptional cases, candidates with at least second class lower in any social science, or Accounting Education, or Management science or science discipline, may be considered, 2 provided such candidate must make up for the deficiencies in core accounting courses at the undergraduate level.
Candidates may be required to satisfy the Department in an oral interview or written examination or both prior to admission.

How to Apply

Most Postgraduate schools of Nigerian Universities place adverts on Newspapers and on the internet at the beginning of admission into their programmes, including Accountancy. In applying, prospective students who meet the entry requirements are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee or purchase the form, after which they are to submit the form and their credentials and this is done either online or in person at the Postgraduate school, depending on the method a school uses. In some schools, filled forms and credentials are submitted at the departmental office.


Admission Process

Most Postgraduate schools in Nigerian Universities do not write aptitude test to gain admission; admission is based on excellence in prospective students’ credentials. The admission board set up by the school’s management, screens the credentials and shortlist names of students based on merit. Students with higher qualifications or better results are considered first for admission. At the end of the compilation, the admission list is released, either on the school’s website, newspaper or notice board of the PG school.


School Fees

The school fees for Accountancy Postgraduate program in Nigeria differ due to the different management of the school. It also varies depending on students’ nationality or country of residence. Students must be able to provide documentary evidence from a sponsor that these fees will be paid on due dates or that they will be able to meet the cost themselves. If the fees are not paid by the due date then a late payment charge will be incurred by the student.


Fees can be paid through bankers’ draft, bank tellers or e-transact, depending on the school. The school fees include payment for tuition, registration, examination, health, caution, library, I.D card, accommodation (optional) etc. The total amount ranges from one hundred thousand naira to four hundred thousand naira depending on the school. Private Universities charge higher.



Accountancy Postgraduate program in Nigeria lasts for one year while the Masters programme is two years, including course work and thesis.
