Postgraduate Programme in Microbiology
Microbiology is one of the Natural Sciences offered in the Postgraduate School of most Nigerian Universities, approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The programme was designed in a bid to further educate knowledge seekers in order to serve competently in various sectors of the economy.
As a result of the high peculiar nature and demand for Microbiology, Nigerian Universities aim to produce highly motivated and high quality Microbiologist who is much needed in a developing country like Nigeria.
Nigerian Postgraduate schools offering Microbiology are concerned with producing well-trained microbiologists, to be able to engage in collaborative cutting edge research within and outside the country as a means of promoting excellence and maintaining leadership.
Also, to produce graduates empowered in each of the existing areas of the science of Microbiology namely: Medical, Industrial, Food and Environmental Microbiology such that they become fully fledged to be able to produce adequate revenue generating consultancy services.
Through the Postgraduate programme, the students will be able to deliver high quality teaching of the subject Microbiology to medical and other students, produce effective and competent professional academic and technical staff in specialized areas of Medical Microbiology.
They will be able to engage in meaningful research that will impact on treatment of patients and contribute to the wealth of knowledge in Microbiology, train and prepare resident doctors for the fellowship of the West African College and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The admission requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM) includes B.Sc degree with a 3rd Class or pass honours in Microbiology and related courses such as B.Sc (Hons) in Biology, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, HND with at least credit level pass in Microbiology and the related courses listed above while the admission requirements for MSc in Microbiology is a first or second class honours degree in Microbiology from any recognized University.
The course is also open to graduates of related fields such as Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Biology, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Sciences. Such candidates will be required to take remedial undergraduate courses in Microbiology to remedy any deficiency based on the student’s background. All MSc students are required to take postgraduate courses.
How to Apply
Most Postgraduate schools of Nigerian Universities place adverts on Newspapers and on the internet at the beginning of admission into their programmes, including Microbiology. In applying, prospective students who meet the entry requirements are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee or purchase the form, after which they are to submit the form and their credentials and this is done either online or in person at the Postgraduate school, depending of the method of the school. In some schools, filled forms and credentials are submitted at the departmental office.
Most Postgraduate schools in Nigerian Universities do not write aptitude test to gain admission; admission is based on excellence in prospective students’ credentials. The admission board set up by the school’s management, screens the credentials and shortlist names of students based on merit. Students with higher qualifications or better results are considered first for admission. At the end of the compilation, the admission list is released, either on the school’s website, newspaper or notice board of the PG school.
The school fees for Microbiology Postgraduate students in Nigeria differ due to the different management of the school. It also varies depending on students’ nationality or country of residence. Students must be able to provide documentary evidence from a sponsor that these fees will be paid on due dates or that they will be able to meet the cost themselves. If the fees are not paid by the due date then a late payment charge will be incurred by the student. Fees can be paid through bankers’ draft, bank tellers or e-transact, depending on the school. The school fees include payment for tuition, registration, examination, health, caution, library, I.D card, accommodation (optional) etc. The total amount ranges from one hundred thousand naira to four hundred thousand naira depending on the school. Private Universities charge higher.
Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology lasts for one year while the Masters programme is two years, including course work and thesis.
